GAS FIRE PITS vs. WOOD BURNING FIRE PITS

This is a tough one. I have always been pro wood fire pits then one day we were having a party during a burn ban so I took a gas fire pit table out of our inventory and used it at the party. It was nice for several reasons but I missed the campfire feel of the wood burning fire pit.

THE PRO'S OF A GAS BURNING FIRE PIT

Convenient. There is something to be said about going out on the patio and having glass of wine for a few minutes and chillin by a fire without making a big fuss. With a gas fire pit you just turn on the gas and light it and your done. When your ready to go inside turn off the gas and go inside. The game changer here is that you don't smell like smoke. This is Big the game changer here is that you don't smell like smoke.

Gas fire pits make better tables when not being used as a gas fire pit.

The gas fire pit is just cleaner. No ashes.

More versatility. There is so many options on the market now that you ought to get the look your after that will accentuate your patio.

THE PRO'S ON A WOOD BURNING FIRE PIT

Everyone loves a wood burning fire. Period, Start a fire and the whole party will soon be magnetized to the fire.

A wood burning fire pit will put out more heat then a gas fire pit most of the time.

Firewood is more readily available in most situations.

It's easier to cook on a wood burning fire pit.

A wood burning fire pit is more aromatic. Smells great

THE CON'S OF A GAS FIRE PIT

It is an excellent idea to keep the gas fire pit covered when not in use. I say this for reasons other then the obvious. FIrst off you don't want leaves getting into the lava rock on your gas fire pit. Why? Because no matter how well you clean out the leaves you will miss some. Once you light the gas fire pit the fire will ignite the leaves and because of the updraft force coming from the fire it will lift the now burning leaf well into the air and probably landing on other leaves in the yard. We sell a lot of fire pit safety screens for gas fire pits just for this reason.

Your gas fire pit most likely will have lava rock covering the burner. Well if lava rock is exposed to moisture it will absorb the moisture and retain the moisture in it's porous cavities. If you start the fire before the moisture has evaporated you are heating the moisture in these cavities and making steam. Once there is enough steam pressure the lava rock will explode. Sometimes rather violently. The fix here is a fire pit safety screen or to pre-heat the gas fire pit before it's being used. If the gas fire pit has been exposed to moisture then pre-heat the lava rock and burn out the moisture.

Running out of gas at the wrong time. If I had a gas fire pit I'd (I Do) have 3 propane tanks because I guarantee when you run out of gas it won't be at a convenient time.

The quality of heat. Especially the out of the box gas fire pits. They are not a good source of heat. They are good for ambiance. Don't get me wrong they do put out heat but you might be disappointed. Now on the other hand if you built a gas fire pit to my specs you would get heat but it would need to be hooked to a piped gas line.

THE CON'S OF A WOOD BURNING FIRE PIT

Smoke! You can't get away from it. It's part of the package.

Dealing with firewood is a pain unless your burning downed trees the it's a good thing.

The flying ashes and debris needs to but dealt with using a safety screen. Check the law it's probably required by your county. I know Dallas county requires one. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE DON'T BE SURPRISED WHEN YOUR WELL LIKED NEIGHBOR CALLS THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. I hear it this almost daily.

Cleaning it could be a pain if it's not built right.

If the wood burning fire pit isn't built right you will have maintenance issues. Concrete and mortar and fire don't go together very well.
If the mason used mortar on the inside to adhere the fire brick you could have issues.
If you have coping over hanging into the fire pit that was adhered with mortar you could have issues.
If the floor of your fire pit is concrete be real real careful. Read above about lava rock. This same activity happens with wet concrete and fire.
